Mostar (official name: The City of Mostar) is a larger city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, cultural and economic center of Herzegovina and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. It is named after the bridge keepers on the banks of the Neretva River. The city is known for the famous Old Bridge, built in the 16th century, which was destroyed by HVO forces in November 9th in 1993. After the war, the bridge was re-built in 2004. Old Bridge is the first monument in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is included in the UNESCO list of protected cultural monuments of the world.
The city is largest urban center in Herzegovina and the fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today the population of the city itself is 64,301 inhabitants. In the entire district, according to estimates of the Statistical Office of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003, the total population counts 105,448 people. There are 50,019 Bosnians, 50,929 Croats, 3,644 Serbs and 856 others. Surrounding the urban area is very populated, with rich communities such as Potoci, Vrapcici and Rodoc.
